The Border Collie, is the most popular herding dog. They run fast and wide to gather large groups, and creep up slowly so as not to "spook" the sheep. And Borders respond superbly to whistle commands, sometimes from as much as a mile away! This style of herding is generally referred to as "fetching" or "gathering", because the dogs primary function is to fetch sheep to the shepherd.
